1941 macht sich das deutsche Schlachtschiff Bismarck auf den Weg, um von Norwegen aus in den Atlantik durchzubrechen. Dort soll das Kriegsschiff dabei helfen, die Briten von der Versorgung mit Gütern abzuschneiden. Der für Marineoperationen zuständige Jonathan Shepard (Kenneth More) leitet die Gegenmaßnahmen der Briten. Er will unbedingt verhindern, dass die Bismarck ihr Operationsgebiet erreicht. Er schickt verschiedene Kriegsschiffe auf den Weg, um das feindliche Boot zu versenken. An Bord der Bismarck planen Kapitän zur See Lindemann (Carl Möhner) und Flottenchef Admiral Lütjens (Karel Stepanek) die Route. Nach anfänglichen Erfolgen gegen die britische Marine muss jedoch auch die Bismarck erste nennenswerte Treffer hinnehmen. Zwischen Shepard, der sich langsam zu seiner Kollegin Anne Davis (Dana Wynter) hingezogen fühlt, und den Kommandanten der Bismarck entbrennt ein gnadenloses Duell um die beste Strategie.
