Plot

1937 wird die privilegierte sowjetische Universittsprofessorin Eugenia Ginzburg aufgrund von absurden Anschuldigungen verhaftet und zu zehn Jahren Zwangsarbeit im sibirischen Gulag verurteilt. Mit Gedichten aus der von ihr ber alles geschtzten russischen Literatur gelingt ihr der intellektuelle Kraftakt, dem Wahnsinn stalinistischer Willkr nicht nur selbst die Stirn zu bieten, sondern auch ihre Leidensgenossinnen im Lager zum Durchhalten zu inspirieren. Doch als Eugenia vom Tod ihres Sohnes erfhrt, erlischt ihr Lebensmut. Erst die Liebe zu dem russlanddeutschen Lagerarzt Anton Walter gibt ihr, wider aller Vernunft, neue Hoffnung: Er versteht es, trotz seines eigenen Schicksals den barbarischen Lebensbedingungen mit uneigenntziger Menschlichkeit zu begegnen. Selbst die strengsten Repressalien knnen nicht verhindern, dass die Beziehung der beiden allen Anfechtungen standhlt.
