In den 1950ern: Laura (Christina Ricci) ist mit ihrem siebenjährigen Sohn Cody (Santino Barnard) auf der Flucht vor ihrem gewalttätigen Ehemann. Weit ab von der nächsten Großstadt finden die zwei im Landhaus eines hilfsbereiten älteren Paares (Don Baldaramos, Colleen Camp) eine neue Bleibe. Im nahegelegen Dorf findet Laura einen Job als Schreibkraft, während Cody die dortige Schule besucht. Ihr neues Leben könnte perfekt sein, wenn der Junge nicht jede Nacht von gruseligen Visionen von einem Monster aus dem Teich hinter dem Häuschen geschüttelt würde. Laura glaubt zunächst, dass es mit den bedrohlichen Anrufen ihres Gatten zu tun hätte, der irgendwie ihre neue Nummer herausbekommen hat. Doch bald muss sie feststellen, dass die Albträume des Kleinen offenbar schreckliche Realität sind.
